About Raden
Raden is a technique for decorating lacquer and woodwork, in which beautiful shells such as turban shells, abalone shells, and pearl oysters are used to create patterns and then inlaid or pasted onto vessels and other items. It was used as an architectural pattern representing the Pure Land in the Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in Temple and the Golden Hall of Chuson-ji Temple. It is the main craft of Ryukyu Raden, and the Raden method is also used in Thailand and Vietnam.
