Kiso vermilion
The brilliance of good old traditions
The process of applying lacquerware involves repeatedly applying the paint, polishing it, and then applying and polishing it.
Kiso Tsuishu is a type of carved lacquerware with a red surface. Many of them are made by carving patterns into multiple layers of vermilion lacquer. Tsuishu is so familiar that it can be used to refer to any type of carved lacquer. There are different ways to tell them apart, such as the thickness of the lacquer layers, the layers of colored lacquer visible on the carved opening, and the patterns and carving techniques, but all carved lacquerware with a red surface has come to be called Tsuishu.
Kiso Tsuishu is one of Japan's traditional lacquer crafts, a technique that has been traditionally practiced in the Kiso region. Characterized by the beauty of its vermilion color and its glossy feel, it is highly regarded as a traditional Japanese craft. Its beauty and high quality are achieved through the techniques and handiwork of its artisans.
A charm that shines brighter over time
Vermilion has been deeply rooted in the lives of Japanese people since ancient times as a color that wards off evil and represents life. The vivid color ( nuri-shu ) of Kiso Tsuishu lacquer adds brilliance to the dining table and gives a powerful presence to the space. The charm of real lacquer (nuri-shu) is that it deepens over the years and gives off a more refined shine the more it is used. One of the joys of Kiso Tsuishu is that it can be passed down from generation to generation and enjoyed as it changes.
Traditional beauty alive in modern life
Some people may think that traditional crafts are prestigious and difficult to incorporate into everyday life. However, Kiso Tsuishu has a beautiful appearance and the power to blend naturally into various scenes of daily life. As a dish to decorate the dining table, as a small storage box to accentuate the living room, or as a gift for a special person. The charm of Kiso Tsuishu is that it can be adapted to modern lifestyles while inheriting the good old traditions.
Breathing new life into the brilliance of good old traditions
Kiso Tsuishu is a product of the rich wood and pure water nurtured by the Kiso mountains, and the souls of the artisans who live there. The vermilion lacquer, which is applied in multiple layers, is filled with depth and warmth, like a jewel that has aged over time. Apply and polish, apply and polish. What is born from this mind-boggling process is not just a vessel, but a crystallization of the Japanese aesthetic sense that has been passed down through time.
