About lacquer
Suriurushi is a lacquering process ( rubbing lacquer) in which raw lacquer is rubbed thinly onto the surface to create a thin coating, with the main purpose of increasing strength. A small amount of raw lacquer is applied to a lacquer brush or absorbent cotton, rubbed well into the surface of the vessel, and then wiped off. This prevents oil and water from penetrating. It can also be done repeatedly directly on the wood, and a finish made in this way is called fukiurushi .
