About Tamenuri
Tamenuri is a type of lacquer coating in which a highly transparent suki urushi lacquer is applied in the finishing stage. In this technique, first a base coat of bengala lacquer is applied, then after drying, charcoal is used to remove the gloss. A top layer of transparent lacquer such as kijiro urushi or shugo urushi is then applied. When a transparent lacquer is applied after the base coat of vermilion lacquer, it is called shu tamenuri or beni tamenuri. When a transparent lacquer is applied leaving the wood grain visible, it is called kiji tamenuri.
In addition, tamari-nuri is also included in urumi -shu-nuri (simply called urumi) .
