About Kawarinuri and Saya-nuri

Kawarinuri is a topcoat technique, one of many types of decorative finishes, including maki-e and wax-colored finishes. Kawarinuri can be similar to kyushitsu (applying lacquer with a brush) or maki-e. Kawarinuri can be made with squeezed lacquer or rust lacquer, or with plant fruits or seeds sprinkled on it, while maki-e can be made with various shells or with pine needles sprinkled on it. There are hundreds of techniques for kawarinuri.

During the Edo period, various types of urushi paint were developed as a cheap way to apply urushi paint, and they spread mainly among lower-ranking samurai as urushi paint for the sheaths of swords. Therefore, urushi paint is included in the category of urushi paint. It is expected that the number of such techniques will continue to increase in the future.
