Yajikita slurps a bowl of grated yam and sobs while hiding in the Mariko tree.
Adapted from "Mariko's Tree": A contrast between frivolous everyday life and profound destiny
The frivolous daily life of Yaji and Kita, and the farewells borne by mother and son
Hiroshige's depiction of Yaji and Kita and their mother and son in their everyday life, a scene at a grated yam soup restaurant, is transformed into a symbol of the cruel separations of the time, as mother and son see off someone who is leaving.
Yajikita slurps down grated yam soup during a serious departure scene.
What the mother and son's eyes reflect is not the "everyday, worldly" scenery that exists here and now, but the back of another traveler who is already disappearing into the darkness. Yaji and Kita, slurping grated yam, pretend not to notice, as if it were part of their everyday lives.

"Mother and child seeing off another traveler: Yajikita's everyday life in contrast"
The conflict dwelling in the traveler's eyes and the passionate energy emanating from the Mariko tree
A wave of energy gently sways from the mother carrying her child towards the other traveller. Behind her, the blossoming branches of the plum tree flow like a stream, and the energy reaches out low, as if to poke the other traveller in the back.
In the eyes of the other traveler, a mixture of feelings of regret that drives him to head out into the unknown sea and a longing to cling to everyday life with his mother and child swirls.
This invisible fluctuation in her heart manifests itself as the strange shape of the Mariko Tree. The tree's center of gravity leans towards the sea outside, while the energy at the tips of its branches points sharply towards the mother and child, as if unable to cut off their love and affection.
The man and the tree are united here as a single emotion. The two opposing forces, neither clashing nor interfering with each other, leap into the viewer's eye in a tranquil harmony within the depths of the painting.
Those who devour without knowing, and those who pass through the abyss and wait to blossom.
Yaji and Kita slurp grated yam in their endlessly frivolous daily lives. Right behind them, the vacillation between mother and son and the energy of Mariko's tree silently spread a deep web of destiny. Is this how things in this world always turn out?
Those who eat without a care in the world, and those who stare into the abyss and walk away. This unbridgeable gap is the truth behind the "Mariko Tree" that has taken root on the jet-black board.
*From the translation, if there is a plum tree (flowers) behind the mother and child, then Mariko's tree, given the time of year, is probably a cherry blossom bud waiting to bloom for another traveler heading to Fuji...
