蠟色仕上げ Roiro

Waxy finish Roiro

About the wax color finish

Roiro finish is a lacquering technique also known as roiro nuri. It is a technique in which the topcoated surface is thoroughly polished, rubbed with raw lacquer, and given a glossy finish. The surface is then polished with charcoal until all knots, dirt, and brush marks are almost gone, the lacquer is hardened with raw lacquer, and polished with roiro charcoal. The painted surface is thoroughly polished with a mixture of rapeseed oil and whetstone powder, and rubbing lacquer is applied and allowed to harden. This process is repeated. The color and luster of the painted surface of a roiro finish is said to be jet black, and it has a dignity that cannot be achieved with paint other than lacquer. The roiro finish is a black lacquer finish, but there is also a wood base roiro finish that shows the wood grain, and a vermilion roiro finish that uses vermilion lacquer.
