About Shunkei Lacquerware

Shunkei lacquering is a type of lacquerware that uses coloring on wood such as cypress, sawara, and horse chestnut, and is a technique that enhances transparency and brings out the beauty of the grain.Currently, there are Hida Shunkei, Noshiro Shunkei, Kakunodate Shunkei, Awano (Mito) Shunkei, Kiso (Yasawa) Shunkei, and Ise Shunkei.

Because Shunkei lacquering is a simple technique, it reflects the quality of the base material, the undercoat, and the ingenuity used in refining the lacquer.

Shunkei lacquerware is made in two colors, yellow and red, with yellow made from gardenia, amaryllis, meu, and auramine, and red made from red ochre, crimson, and scarlet. Finally, a top coat is applied, and the technique of this top coat and the quality of the lacquer greatly affect the superiority of the product.

Kiso Shunkei : A robust technique that makes use of the wood grain and rubs lacquer into the wood. There are three representative lacquering techniques for Kiso lacquerware: Kiso Shunkei, Kiso Tsuishu , and Nuriwake Roiro.
